How scents may enhance mood
The olfactory bulb—part of the limbic system—is one of the oldest and most primal areas of the brain. When we experience a scent, it sets off a cascade of activity that can enhance a wide spectrum of emotions—ranging from happiness, comfort and nostalgia to arousal, energy and even a sense of empowerment.
Fragrances are deeply intertwined with our personal memories and emotional associations. A particular scent might remind us of a loved one, a cherished place, or a defining moment in our lives. As a result, just one breath may transport us back in time, reigniting feelings of love, desire, safety, or strength.
