Tilbury Tip: Before you define your Cupid’s bow, darlings, discover which type of lip shape you have.

What is a Cupid’s Bow?

Your Cupid’s bow is the indentation in the centre of your upper lip that gives lips a defined-looking, heart-like shape. The Cupid’s bow takes its name from Cupid’s bow and arrow because it resembles the shape of an angel’s bow with rounded arches and a precise point in the middle. There are various types of Cupid’s bow with some being more pronounced than others – some have a deep V shape in the centre, whereas others look shallower or more rounded.

Does Everyone Have A Cupid’s Bow?

Most lip shapes have a Cupid’s bow, however some are more prominent than others. If you have heart-shaped or bow-shaped lips, your Cupid’s bow is likely to be a defining feature with a well-established shape. If you have round lips, full lips or a fuller upper lip, your Cupid’s bow may be softer and less defined due to the natural plumpness of your top lip.

How To Create a Defined Cupid’s Bow with Lip Liner

The best way to accentuate the look of your Cupid’s bow with makeup is to overline and define it with lip liner. Reach for a precise lip pencil like my Lip Cheat or Lip Cheat Contour Duos to map out a flattering shape for your Cupid’s bow. For a defined looking Cupid’s bow, you can either follow the natural shape of your lips or create a more pronounced shape using lip liner. Discover Different Styles of Lip Liner for Cupid’s Bow

Heart-shaped Cupid’s Bow: A rounded shape with a deep V in the centre that resembles a love heart.

Bow-shaped Cupid’s Bow: A rounded shape with a soft, shallow V in the centre that resembles the arch of a bow.

Crescent-shaped Cupid’s Bow: A pointed shape that dips in the centre to resemble a round, crescent moon ridge.

Domed Cupid’s Bow: A rounded shape without definition in the centre to create the illusion of full, pillowy lips.

How To Define Your Cupid’s Bow with Lip Liner: Heart, Bow, Crescent and Domed Cupid’s Bow Looks

  1. Heart-shaped defined Cupid's bow

    Heart-Shaped Cupid’s Bow

The most defined-looking Cupid’s bows have a deep V that gives them the appearance of a love heart. To get a heart-shaped Cupid’s bow look, take your lip liner and draw an X in the centre of your top lip, then softly round out either side to create the appearance of a heart. If you don’t have a naturally heart-shaped Cupid’s bow, you can extend the X you create outside of your lip shape – just be sure to align the centre of the X with the centre of your Cupid’s bow to create a convincing lip proportion.

Perfect for: Heart-shaped lips or naturally full lips.

  2. Bow-shaped defined Cupid's bow

    Bow-Shaped Cupid’s Bow

Much like a heart-shaped Cupid’s bow, a bow-shaped Cupid’s bow has a V shape in the centre, however it is shallower and creates a more subtle, understated shape. To perfect the bow-shaped Cupid’s bow look, dot lip liner into the centre of your Cupid’s bow to mark the centre, then glide in a softly arched shape towards the outer corners of your lip to create the appearance of a classic Cupid’s bow. To master the softness of bow-shaped lips, I suggest using a light hand when overlining and opting for a more minimal, true-to-you lip shape.

Perfect for: Bow-shaped lips or lips that are wider than they are full.

  3. Crescent-shaped defined Cupid's bow

    Crescent-Shaped Cupid’s Bow

If you prefer your Cupid’s bow to look less pronounced, I recommend creating a crescent-shaped Cupid’s bow with lip liner. If you have a defined Cupid’s bow, you can fill in the centre to create a softer, rounder-looking shape by shading across the naturally occurring V shape to resemble an upturned crescent moon. Due to the dipped appearance of a crescent-shaped Cupid’s bow, I suggest keeping close to your natural lip line in the centre, then softly overlining on either side to create a fuller-looking shape.

Perfect for: Thin lips or lips without a defined Cupid’s bow.

  4. Domed defined Cupid's bow

    Domed Cupid’s Bow

To disguise the appearance of your Cupid’s bow entirely, you can overline your lips to create a domed shape. Overdrawing your lips into a domed shape forms the illusion of fuller, rounder lips that look pouty and plump. To get the look, glide your lip liner in a straight line slightly above your natural Cupid’s bow. Then, extend the line you have created and meet the outer corners of your mouth to create a domed shape that looks like a sun setting across your lips.

Perfect for: those with round lips without a defined Cupid’s bow.
